Mental Health Resources in West Virginia: Where to Turn

West Virginia has several free places to start. Call or text 988 for crisis support at any hour, or call or text Help4WV at 1-844-435-7498 to be connected with services around the state. Community behavioral health centers serve people across West Virginia, and outpatient therapy, including online sessions, fits ongoing concerns.

Key points

  • 988 offers free, confidential crisis support by call, text or chat, at any hour, for you or for someone you are worried about.
  • Help4WV (1-844-HELP4WV) is a free, confidential West Virginia line that connects people with services across the state.
  • Children and young people up to age 21 can get mobile crisis response through the Children's Crisis and Referral Line, which uses the same Help4WV number.
  • West Virginia's public behavioral health system is anchored by 13 Comprehensive Behavioral Health Centers.
  • Outpatient therapy, in person or by video, fits concerns that are ongoing rather than an emergency.

Start here: which kind of help fits right now

Looking for mental health support can feel like a lot when you are already tired or worried. It gets easier once you sort what you need into one of three kinds of help: help right now in a crisis, help finding services, and ongoing care such as therapy.

This guide walks through the free resources the State of West Virginia lists for each, using the state's own pages. It is general information as of October 2026. Phone numbers and programs can change, so check the official page if something does not work.

Reaching out is an ordinary and sensible thing to do. Many people make the first call for someone else, a teen, a partner or a parent, and that counts too.

Crisis support any time: 988 and Help4WV

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available around the clock, and conversations are free and confidential. You can call, text or chat with a counselor during a hard moment, for yourself or for a friend or loved one. West Virginia's Bureau for Behavioral Health lists 988 for thoughts of suicide, a mental health crisis or any emotional distress.

The Bureau also lists Help4WV, a free and confidential West Virginia line. You can call, text or chat with a trained crisis specialist at any time of day and be connected with services across the state, such as treatment programs, peer support and crisis care. The number is 1-844-HELP4WV, which is 1-844-435-7498.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. The National Institute of Mental Health advises calling 911 or going to the nearest emergency room in a life-threatening situation.

Help for children, teens and families

West Virginia offers Children's Mobile Crisis Response and Stabilization statewide for children and young people up to age 21 and their families. Families reach it through the Children's Crisis and Referral Line, which uses the same number: 844-HELP4WV, by call or text, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or by chat.

According to the Bureau for Behavioral Health, mobile crisis teams include people with special training in calming a situation down, and they know local resources. After the immediate moment, staff help connect the young person with programs in their community, at home and at school.

The state also runs West Virginia Wraparound, which brings together services from three bureaus of the Department of Human Services for young people and families with the highest needs.

Community behavioral health centers

For ongoing care, the Bureau for Behavioral Health says West Virginia's publicly funded behavioral health system is anchored by 13 Comprehensive Behavioral Health Centers. These centers serve communities across the state.

Some providers have also become Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics. The state's page explains that these clinics must serve anyone who asks for mental health care, regardless of ability to pay, where they live or their age, including care suited to children and youth.

  • Your primary care provider can do a first mental health screening and refer you to a mental health professional, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
  • If you have insurance, your plan can tell you which providers it covers, often through an app or online directory.
  • Students can check their school's health center, and many employers offer a free, confidential Employee Assistance Program.

When outpatient therapy fits

Outpatient therapy is regular appointments with a licensed counselor or social worker while you go on with daily life. It fits concerns that keep showing up: worry that is hard to switch off, low mood that lingers, sleep that has gone off track, or memories of something frightening that still intrude.

Therapy can help you understand what is going on and practice new ways to cope. For worry and panic, our anxiety therapy page explains what that work can look like. For the after-effects of a frightening or painful experience, see our trauma and PTSD therapy page.

Video sessions can make therapy easier to reach in a state with long drives. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that virtual care can be effective for conditions such as anxiety, depression and PTSD, and that virtual visits may reach people who cannot easily get to in-person care. You need an internet connection, a device and a private spot.
