This might be for you if you notice

  • Thoughts about food, weight or shape that take up much of your day
  • Strict food rules that are hard to break, even when you want to
  • Eating large amounts while feeling out of control, then feeling ashamed
  • Trying to make up for eating by vomiting, fasting or exercising hard
  • Avoiding meals with other people
  • A parent who is worried about a teen's eating

Eating disorders are real, and recovery is possible

Eating disorders are serious illnesses that involve severe disturbances in eating behaviors. They are not a choice, and they are not a phase or a failure of willpower. They can affect people of all ages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, body weights and sexes.

The more familiar types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Each looks different. What they share is that food, weight or eating has started to run a person's life.

Here is the hopeful part: eating disorders can be treated successfully, and with treatment people can recover. Getting help early matters, so there is no need to wait until things feel severe enough.

How therapy fits into eating disorder care

Treatment plans for eating disorders are built around the person and can include psychotherapy, medical care and monitoring, nutritional counseling and, for some people, medication. Therapy is the part we provide.

In therapy, you work on the troubling thoughts, emotions and behaviors connected to food and your body. Therapists on our team draw on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills and mindfulness-based approaches. Not every therapist uses every approach.

A therapist on our team is Health at Every Size (HAES) informed and has experience working in an eating disorder treatment center. Sessions with a HAES-informed therapist are a weight-inclusive space, where you are treated with respect in the body you have today.

For teens, involving the family can improve how treatment goes. We work with parents as well as young people, and you can learn more on our teen therapy and family therapy pages.

What we offer, and when you need a medical team

Eating disorders can affect physical health, and they can be life-threatening. Being clear about our role helps keep you safe.

Outpatient support only

  • We offer outpatient talk therapy by secure video.
  • We do not provide medical monitoring, and we do not prescribe medication.
  • If there is any medical risk, you need a medical team as well. Therapy alone is not enough in that situation.
  • Some people with serious eating disorders need a hospital or a residential treatment program. If you need a higher level of care, we will help you look for one.
  • If you think you are in physical danger, call 911.

What online sessions look like

Every session is a secure video visit, so you can meet with your therapist from a private, comfortable place. There is no office to visit.

You need to be physically located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Arizona during each session. Evening and weekend appointments are available, and exact times depend on the therapist.

A session might include talking through a hard meal, noticing the thought that showed up before a binge, or practicing a skill for riding out an urge. You set the pace. Anxiety or low mood can come along with an eating disorder, and your therapist can work on that with you. See our anxiety therapy page for more.

Sessions are confidential, with legal exceptions for risk of serious harm to yourself or others and for suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult.

Questions people ask

Can eating disorder therapy be done online?

The talk therapy part of eating disorder care can take place by video. Our sessions are secure video visits with a licensed therapist. Online therapy does not replace medical care, so if there is any medical risk, you will also need a medical team that can see you in person and monitor your health.

Do I need a diagnosis before I reach out?

No. You do not need a diagnosis, a certain body size or a certain level of struggle to ask for help. If thoughts about food, weight or eating are taking up a lot of your life, that is reason enough to talk with someone. Getting help early is important for recovery.

What does Health at Every Size informed mean?

It means your therapist takes a weight-inclusive approach. Sessions focus on your wellbeing, your relationship with food and how you feel in your body, without judging you by a number on a scale. People in all body sizes can have an eating disorder, and you will be treated with respect in the body you have.

Do you provide medical monitoring or a higher level of care?

No. Locascio Wellness offers outpatient therapy only. We do not provide medical monitoring, intensive programs or residential treatment, and we do not prescribe medication. A person with medical risk needs a medical team. If a higher level of care would serve you better, we will help you look for one.

Does insurance cover eating disorder therapy?

We are in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Highmark, Independence Blue Cross, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, Geisinger, Optum, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare. We do not accept Medicaid. Coverage depends on your plan and your state, so please check our insurance and fees page or ask us to verify your benefits. Self-pay is also available.

Can you help my teenager?

Our team works with teens and their families. Which therapist sees which ages varies, so we match your teen with someone who is a good fit and licensed in your state. For young people, involving the family can improve how eating disorder treatment goes, so parents are often part of the work. A teen with any medical risk also needs a medical team.

What if I am not ready to change how I eat?

That is a normal place to start. Mixed feelings about change are understandable, and you will not be pushed faster than you can go. Your therapist can begin by simply understanding what food and eating mean for you right now. Readiness can grow once a person feels heard.
