This might be for you if
- You want a clear picture of your thinking strengths and the areas that take more effort
- Learning or problem-solving has always felt different for you and you would like to understand why
- A school, employer or agency has asked you for a current cognitive evaluation
- You were tested as a child and want an up-to-date picture as an adult
- You are planning school or work changes and want to know how you learn
What cognitive or IQ testing is
An intellectual functioning evaluation looks at how you reason, learn and solve problems. Most people know it as IQ testing. MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, describes intelligence quotient (IQ) testing as a series of exams used to determine general intelligence in relation to other people of the same age.
According to that source, the abilities these tests measure include language, mathematical, analytical and spatial skills, such as reading a map. Each test has its own scoring system.
The useful part is rarely one number. It is the pattern: where your thinking is strong, where it takes more effort, and what that means for how you learn and work.
Why adults ask for cognitive testing
Some adults come because an organization has asked for a current evaluation. Others have their own questions about how they learn, or want to understand a pattern they have noticed since school.
Intellectual functioning is also one part of how an intellectual disability is identified. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development explains that the diagnosis is typically made through a test of intelligence or cognition, and that clinicians also assess adaptive behavior, meaning the everyday skills a person uses to look after themselves and get along with others. We offer intellectual disability evaluations, which look at both.
If the request comes from an agency for benefits or accommodations, our disability evaluation page may also be relevant. If your question is mainly about learning, such as reading or writing, see our psychoeducational evaluation page.
What testing can and cannot tell you
MedlinePlus is frank about the limits. It notes that whether IQ tests measure actual intelligence or simply certain abilities is debated, that they may not accurately assess a person's talents or future potential, and that results of any intelligence test may be culturally biased. It describes IQ tests as only one way to measure how well a person functions.
We read results in that spirit. A score describes how you did on certain tasks on a certain day. It does not measure your worth, your creativity or what you can go on to do.
What we want you to know up front
- We cannot tell you ahead of time what an evaluation will find
- We cannot promise that a school, program, employer or agency will accept a report or act on it
- Requirements differ, so ask whoever requested the evaluation exactly what they need and who must sign it, and share that before you book
- This is not a memory screening for dementia. MedlinePlus describes that as a different kind of cognitive testing, and new memory or thinking changes are best raised with your doctor
How online cognitive testing works
The evaluation is carried out entirely by secure video. There is no office to visit. You must be physically located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Arizona during your appointments.
The National Institute of Mental Health notes that online appointments require an internet connection and a device like a smartphone or computer, and that virtual visits may feel less private if people nearby can see or overhear. For this kind of evaluation, a quiet room where you will not be interrupted matters. We will tell you at your consultation how to set up.
An evaluation usually involves an intake appointment, then one or two sessions, then time for the written report. At the moment, the report is usually ready about a month after the first evaluation appointment, so tell us about any deadline. The findings are explained to you in plain language, with time for your questions. Cognitive testing is one of several psychological evaluations we offer.
An evaluation is not emergency care. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911. Locascio Wellness does not provide emergency or crisis services.
Cost and getting started
Evaluations are private-pay and are not billed to insurance. The cost depends on what your evaluation involves, and a sliding scale is available, so please tell us if cost is a barrier. See what evaluations cost for more.
- Send a short requestThe quickest way to ask is our short evaluation request form. It asks for the type of evaluation, age group, state and timing, and no health details. We reply to set up a free 15-minute consultation.
- Talk it throughYou can also pick a consultation time on our booking page, or call 267-573-9817. We talk about what you need, who is asking for it and any deadline.
- Get the cost in writingBefore anything is scheduled, you receive the cost in writing. You have the right to a Good Faith Estimate. See insurance and fees for how payment works.
- Meet by video and review your findingsYour appointments take place by secure video. Afterward, the findings are explained in plain language and you receive a written report to keep.
After your evaluation
Knowing how you think and learn can make choices about study and work feel more grounded. If you would like help putting the findings to use, therapists on our team offer career counseling. Therapy is a separate service from an evaluation, and it is always your choice.
Who carries out the evaluation
Evaluations are carried out by Dr. Anthony Locascio, who holds a Doctor of Psychology degree (PsyD) and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Arizona. He is completing licensure as a psychologist, so every evaluation is supervised and every report is co-signed by Jace St. Cyr, a licensed psychologist (Pennsylvania license PS020275).
He has carried out more than 300 psychological evaluations, most of them with children and teens.
Questions people ask
Can adults take an IQ test online?
At Locascio Wellness, intellectual functioning evaluations for adults are carried out entirely by secure video, with an evaluator and not as a self-scored quiz. You need a device, an internet connection and a quiet, private place. You must be physically located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Arizona during your appointments. The evaluation ends with a written report.
Is cognitive testing the same as IQ testing?
People use the terms in different ways. On this page, cognitive or intellectual functioning testing means what is often called IQ testing: a look at reasoning, learning and problem-solving compared with other people of the same age. It is different from the short cognitive screenings that doctors use to check for memory problems in older adults.
How much does cognitive testing cost, and does insurance pay?
Evaluations at Locascio Wellness are private-pay and are not billed to insurance. The cost depends on what the evaluation involves, and a sliding scale is available if cost is a barrier. You receive the cost in writing before anything is scheduled, and you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate.
What does an IQ test measure?
MedlinePlus says the abilities measured by IQ tests include language, mathematical, analytical and spatial skills. It also notes limits: the tests may not accurately assess a person's talents or future potential, and results may be culturally biased. They are only one way to measure how well a person functions, which is how we explain results to you.
Will a school, program or employer accept the report?
We cannot promise that, and we cannot promise any placement or decision. Requirements differ from one school, program, employer or agency to the next. Before you book, ask whoever requested the evaluation exactly what they need and who must sign it, then share that with us at your free consultation.
Do you offer cognitive testing for children and teens?
Yes. We also evaluate children and teens. A parent or guardian arranges the evaluation and takes part. This page is written for adults, so send the evaluation request form or call 267-573-9817, and tell us your child's age and who is asking for the evaluation.
