  • Lying awake replaying the day or rehearsing tomorrow

  • A child or teen who worries a lot about school, friends or making mistakes

When worry starts running the day

Feeling anxious is a normal part of life. Most of us worry about health, money, school, work or family at times. An anxiety disorder is more than occasional worry: the anxiety does not go away, shows up in many situations, and can get worse over time.

There are several types, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and phobias. They tend to share a few things: anxious thoughts that are hard to control, physical symptoms such as a pounding heartbeat, dizziness or shortness of breath, and changes in behavior, like avoiding everyday activities you used to do.

These can be signs of an anxiety disorder, and they are also a good reason to talk with someone. You do not need a label, or a crisis, to ask for support. Reaching out is an ordinary, capable thing to do, and talk therapy can be effective for anxiety.

How anxiety therapy works

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a research-supported type of talk therapy that is commonly used for anxiety. It teaches different ways of thinking and behaving, so the situations that set off fear start to feel more manageable. CBT can include gradually facing fears, at a pace you agree on, so you can get back to things you have been avoiding.

Therapists on our team also use DBT skills, mindfulness-based approaches and person-centered therapy. Not every therapist uses every approach, so we match you with someone whose style fits what you want to work on.

Stress management habits such as exercise and mindfulness can also reduce anxiety symptoms alongside therapy. We do not prescribe medication. If you have questions about medication, those belong with a prescriber such as your doctor.

What you might work on together

  • Noticing the thoughts and body signals that come before a spiral
  • Calming skills you can use in the moment, like paced breathing
  • Small, planned steps toward the things anxiety has been keeping you from
  • Sleep, routines and boundaries that give your mind more room to rest

What online sessions look like

Every session is a secure video visit. There is no office to drive to and no waiting room. You need a phone, tablet or computer, an internet connection, and a spot where you can talk freely. Many people use a bedroom, a parked car or a quiet corner with headphones.

The National Institute of Mental Health says virtual care can be effective for conditions like anxiety. For some people, starting from a familiar place makes the first session easier. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

Video sessions are for ongoing care, not emergencies. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911. Locascio Wellness does not provide emergency services. Our crisis resources page lists more options.

A calmer day is a realistic goal

Anxiety can make life feel smaller. Therapy is a place to widen it again, one manageable step at a time. Many people find that once they understand how their anxiety works, it has less say over their choices.

If low mood is part of the picture too, our depression therapy page explains more, and parents can read about teen therapy. Whenever you are ready, we would be glad to hear from you.

Questions people ask

Does online therapy work for anxiety?

It can. The National Institute of Mental Health says virtual care can be effective for treating conditions like anxiety. Online sessions use talk therapy approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, and you skip the travel. What matters most is a good fit with your therapist and a private place to talk.

How do online anxiety therapy sessions work?

You meet your therapist by secure video from a phone, tablet or computer. You need an internet connection and a place where you can speak freely. You must be physically in Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Arizona during each session, and we match you with a therapist licensed in your state.

Does insurance cover anxiety therapy?

Often, yes, but it depends on your plan and state. We are in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Highmark, Independence Blue Cross, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, Geisinger, Optum, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare. Medicaid is not accepted. Self-pay is available. Ask us to verify your benefits before your first session so you know what to expect.

What type of therapy is used for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a research-supported approach that is commonly used for anxiety. It teaches different ways of thinking and responding to fear. Therapists on our team also use DBT skills, mindfulness-based approaches and person-centered therapy. Not every therapist uses every approach, so we match you based on what you need.

Can you prescribe anxiety medication?

No. Locascio Wellness provides talk therapy and does not prescribe medication. Decisions about starting, changing or stopping any medication belong with a prescriber, such as your primary care provider or a psychiatric provider. Therapy can be used on its own or alongside care from a prescriber.

Do you offer anxiety therapy for children and teens?

Yes. Our team works with children, teens and adults, and we match your child with a therapist who sees their age group. Young people with anxiety often worry about school, friendships and the future, and may fear making mistakes or disappointing others. Therapy can help them build coping skills, with parents involved as appropriate.

How do I know if my anxiety is serious enough for therapy?

There is no minimum. If worry is hard to control, shows up in many parts of your life, or is leading you to avoid things you used to do, those can be signs of an anxiety disorder and good reasons to talk with a therapist. A free 15-minute consultation is an easy way to ask questions first.
