Start with the right level of help
Mental health support in Florida ranges from a crisis line you can reach in seconds to weekly therapy that helps you build skills over time. Both matter, and they do different jobs.
A simple way to choose is to ask one question: is anyone in danger right now? If the answer is yes, or you are not sure, use the crisis options below. If you are safe but have been anxious, low or worn down for a while, ongoing care such as outpatient therapy is usually the next step.
This guide describes what Florida's own agencies say about their services, as general information as of October 2026.
The 988 Florida Lifeline
The Florida Department of Children and Families, often called DCF, manages the 988 Florida Lifeline. DCF describes it as a free behavioral health support service, available 24/7, that connects Floridians to a trained crisis counselor in their area.
You do not need to be at a breaking point to reach out. DCF says the line is for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, substance use problems, mental health crises or any other kind of emotional distress. The call centers that answer are Florida-based organizations staffed around the clock.
If a caller would benefit from in-person contact, the crisis counselor can refer them to a mobile response team. When someone needs more immediate care, that team can connect them to a crisis stabilization unit, which DCF describes as a facility that provides short-term intensive mental health care.
Mobile response teams
DCF says mobile response teams provide emergency behavioral health care 24/7 to anyone in Florida. They are prepared to meet a person having a severe emotional or behavioral health crisis at home, at school or wherever they are. Their goals include reducing trauma and preventing unnecessary hospital stays and justice system involvement, through calming the situation, crisis care and links to local resources.
According to DCF, services from these teams can include:
- Screening and assessment, including for depression and suicide risk
- Crisis de-escalation and stabilization
- Short-term crisis counseling focused on the event at hand
- Safety or crisis planning, such as a written list of coping strategies and supports
- Care coordination to connect people with local services
Finding ongoing care and checking a license
DCF points out that crisis counseling is not the same as traditional psychotherapy: it deals with one pressing event, not a person's whole history. Once things are calmer, many people look for steady, ongoing care.
If you are considering a private therapist, you can check their license yourself. Florida's Department of Health runs a consumer site, FL HealthSource, with a Verify A License tool. Ask the therapist for their full name and license type, then compare what you find. The same site lets the public report unlicensed activity.
The National Institute of Mental Health suggests asking any therapist about their credentials, their approach, their experience with your concern and how confidentiality works.
When outpatient therapy fits
Outpatient therapy is for people who are safe right now but are carrying something heavy: worry that will not switch off, low mood that has lasted weeks, grief that is not easing, or stress that keeps spilling into work and home. These can be signs that talking with a licensed professional could help.
The National Institute of Mental Health says psychotherapy can help people with depression by teaching new ways of thinking and behaving, and that it can be effective in person or by telehealth. Online sessions cut out travel and can be easier to schedule. They do need a steady connection, a device and a private place to talk.
How we can help
Locascio Wellness is an all-virtual practice, and every session is by secure video. You must be physically in Florida during each session. Our Florida online therapy page explains how it works.
You can read about our anxiety therapy and depression therapy. Coverage depends on your plan, so we verify your benefits before your first session, and self-pay is available. Our insurance and fees page has the details.
When you are ready, start with a free 15-minute consultation on our booking page. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911. Locascio Wellness does not provide emergency services, and our crisis resources page lists more options.
Common questions
Who answers when I dial 988 in Florida?
According to the Florida Department of Children and Families, 988 calls in Florida are answered by Florida-based organizations with crisis counselors available 24/7. The 988 Florida Lifeline is free and is meant for anyone with suicidal thoughts, substance use problems, a mental health crisis or other emotional distress, not only emergencies.
Can a crisis team come to my home in Florida?
Yes. DCF says mobile response teams can meet a person in crisis at home, at school or wherever they are, at any hour. A 988 crisis counselor can refer you to a team if in-person help would be useful. DCF also publishes maps so you can find the team that serves your county.
How do I check a Florida therapist's license?
Use the Verify A License tool on FL HealthSource, the Florida Department of Health's consumer site. Search by the therapist's name and compare the license type and status with what they told you. If someone is practicing without a license, the same site has a link for reporting unlicensed activity.
Can I see a Florida therapist online?
Yes. Many Florida therapists offer sessions by secure video. Our practice has a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Florida who sees adults by video while they are physically in Florida. You start with a free 15-minute consultation, and we verify your insurance benefits or discuss self-pay before your first session.
