Online Couples Counseling in Florida: How It Works

Online couples counseling lets Florida partners meet a licensed therapist by secure video, together on one screen or from two places. It can help with communication, recurring arguments and stressful changes. Because Florida's telehealth law treats care as delivered where the client is, both partners need to be physically in Florida during sessions with a Florida-licensed therapist.

Key points

  • The American Counseling Association describes couples therapy as a way to help partners work through conflict and improve communication.
  • Partners can join from the same room or from separate locations, as long as each has a private space.
  • Florida law treats telehealth care as delivered where the patient is located, so both partners should be in Florida for sessions.
  • You can verify a Florida therapist's license on the Department of Health's FL HealthSource site.
  • If you feel unsafe with your partner, put safety first and reach out for help.

When couples counseling can help

No relationship is free of problems. Mental Health America notes that even couples who seem to get along well disagree, and that relationships can thrive when both partners learn to communicate and compromise. Counseling gives you a structured place to practice that with a neutral guide.

The American Counseling Association describes couples therapy as a form of therapy that helps romantic partners work through conflicts and improve communication. Couples often reach out when:

  • The same argument keeps coming back without being settled
  • You feel more like roommates than partners
  • Trust has been shaken and you both want to rebuild it
  • A big change, such as a move, a new baby, a job loss or retirement, is straining the relationship
  • Stress, anxiety or low mood in one partner is affecting you both

How video sessions work for couples

Online couples counseling looks a lot like an in-person session, only on a screen. The therapist helps each partner speak and be heard, slows down conversations that usually escalate, and helps you try new ways of talking about hard topics.

There are two common setups, and either can work:

  1. Same room, one screenSit side by side so the camera sees you both. Use a laptop or tablet rather than a phone, and keep the device steady so neither of you is cut out of the frame.
  2. Separate rooms or placesEach partner joins on their own device, which can help when schedules differ or one of you is at work. Use headphones to avoid echo, and make sure each space is private.

Privacy and practical tips

The National Institute of Mental Health notes that video visits can feel less private if people nearby can see or overhear, and that some people feel uneasy with a camera at home. For couples, that matters twice over. Plan sessions for a time when children or housemates are out or occupied, close the door, and silence notifications.

It also helps to agree with your therapist, before the first session, on what happens if the connection drops. A poor internet connection or a malfunctioning device can disrupt a session, so a backup plan keeps a hard conversation from ending abruptly.

Why both partners must be in Florida

Section 456.47 of the Florida Statutes, Florida's telehealth law, says that for its purposes the delivery of health care services is deemed to occur where the patient is located at the time, or in the patient's county of residence. A therapist licensed in Florida is licensed to work with clients located in Florida.

In couples counseling, both partners are clients. So with our practice, each partner needs to be physically in Florida during every session. If one of you travels often or lives part of the year in another state, raise it early so the therapist can plan around it. This is general information as of October 2026, not legal advice.

How to choose a couples counselor in Florida

In Florida, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors are overseen by one board within the Department of Health. Before you commit, check the therapist's license with the Verify A License tool on FL HealthSource, the Department's consumer site.

The National Institute of Mental Health suggests looking for a provider who has experience with your concerns, asking about their methods, and considering a free introductory session to see whether they are a good match. In couples work, it matters that both partners feel the therapist is fair to each of them.

If you feel unsafe with your partner, safety comes first. Mental Health America points people in abusive relationships to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, and to 911 if a life is in danger. A therapist can also talk with you on your own.

You can start with a free 15-minute consultation on our booking page. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911. Locascio Wellness does not provide emergency services.

Common questions

Can we do couples counseling from two different places?

Yes. Each partner can join the secure video session from their own device and location, as long as both spaces are private and both partners are physically in Florida during the session. Headphones help with sound and privacy. Some couples mix it up, joining together at home some weeks and separately on others.

What if one partner is out of state for a session?

Then that session may need to move. Florida's telehealth law treats care as delivered where the patient is located, and in couples counseling both partners are clients. With our practice, both partners must be physically in Florida. Tell your therapist about travel early so you can plan sessions around it.

What if my partner does not want to come?

That is common. Mental Health America notes that even if a partner will not go to counseling, you can still talk about the relationship with your own therapist, who can teach coping and communication skills. Sometimes one partner starting alone makes it easier for the other to join later.

Does insurance cover online couples counseling in Florida?

It depends on the plan, and some plans treat couples sessions differently from individual therapy. Our administrative team verifies your benefits before your first session and tells you what we found. Self-pay is available if your plan does not cover it or you prefer not to use insurance.
